Who is it for and what does it do?
A Schengen visa is a special visa for tourist or business visits to Schengen Area countries. There are 26 countries that are members of it and the majority are European countries, namely 22 European Union member countries.
The validity period of this visa is 90 days of stay in a span of 6 months.
The function of this visa is to facilitate travelers and business people among Schengen member countries. By having a Schengen visa, one can visit Schengen countries without having to obtain additional visas in each country visited.
Types of Schengen Visas?
- Schengen Visa Type A (Airport Transit Visa)- This type of visa allows citizens of non-Schengen countries to transit or wait for their next flight at airports located in Schengen countries.
- Type B Schengen Visa - Type B visa is used for trips lasting less than 5 days. This visa has been replaced by Type C with transit requirements.
- Schengen Visa Type C - This is the most common type of Schengen visa. It is issued by a visa service (embassy, consulate, or designated external provider) of a country that belongs to the Schengen area. It allows the visa holder to stay or travel freely in the Schengen area for less than 90 days with a period of 180 days.
- Schengen Visa Type D (National Long-Term Visa) - Often referred to as a national visa, this visa is mandatory for any foreigner who wishes to study, work, or live in Schengen countries for more than 90 days or even up to 1 year.
Steps to obtain a Schengen Visa?
- Find out what type of visa you need - As a first step, you need to know what type of visa you need as explained by the four types above.
- Find out the application location - There are several application locations that you can go to as needed, including embassies, consulates, visa centers, and embassies from Schengen Area countries.
- Determine the Time - Since the application process is quite time-consuming, there is a minimum period of time to apply. You can apply for a Schengen visa as early as 6 months before your departure. The recommended time to apply is three weeks before the travel date.
- Make an Appointment - Apart from making an appointment online, you can also make an appointment in person at the embassy or consulate of the destination country.
- Fill out the Form - Provide information regarding your personal details, reason for travel, and other details related to the trip.
- Gathering documents - Please note that document requirements may vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for.
- Attend the interview - At your appointment, you will be interviewed by a visa consular officer for 10-15 minutes. Make sure to provide clear and accurate information according to the documents you have included.
- Paying for the Schengen visa - The usual fee is €80 per person. For children, there may be a fee waiver or no fee at all.
- Waiting Schedule - This process usually takes 15 days, but you may have to wait longer, up to 45 days.

What is a Uniform Schengen Visa?
A Schengen visa is a permit required to enter and remain in the Schengen area for a short period of time. The visa is time-limited and can be issued for a maximum stay of 90 days within a six-month period. A visa granted by one Schengen country is also valid for entry into other Schengen countries.
