One Indonesian peacekeeper serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed in an incident amid the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on Sunday (March 29).

Head of the Defense Information Bureau (Karo Infohan) of the Ministry of Defense Secretariat General, Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, stated that three other Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel were injured in the incident, one of whom sustained serious injuries.

“There were casualties among TNI personnel: one was killed, one is in critical condition, and two suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment,” said Rico.

However, Rico has not disclosed the identities of the four Indonesian peacekeepers involved, nor the specific nature of the injuries sustained by the three wounded soldiers. “It should be noted that the incident occurred amid ongoing artillery exchanges, and clarification is still being carried out by UNIFIL,” he added.

“Further operational details will be provided by TNI Headquarters,” he continued.

Previously, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the incident in Lebanon and expressed deep condolences over the death of the Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeper.

“I strongly condemn the incident on Sunday in which an Indonesian peacekeeper was killed amid hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah,” Guterres stated on platform X.

He also conveyed his condolences to the family, colleagues, and the Government of Indonesia, while wishing a speedy recovery for those injured.

Guterres emphasized that the incident is part of a series of recent events that endanger the safety of peacekeeping forces.

He called on all parties to comply with international law and to ensure the safety of all UN personnel and assets. (TIM)
