Japan is Raising Visa Fees by 5 Times Starting July 2026

Traveling to Japan is about to get significantly more expensive. Starting July 1, 2026, the Japanese government will implement a massive price hike for visas and residence permits, with some fees increasing up to five times their current rates.

This policy represents the most significant overhaul of Japan's immigration pricing system since 1978. The price adjustment will affect everyone from casual tourists to foreign workers and those applying for permanent residency (PR).

New Japan Visa Costs: Tourist and Multiple-Entry Fees

According to The Japan Times, the cost of a single-entry tourist visa will jump from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000 (approximately Rp330,000 to Rp1.6 million).

Frequent travelers will also face higher costs, as the multiple-entry visa fee is set to rise from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000 (around Rp660,000 to Rp3.3 million). The Japanese government stated that these new rates are intended to bring Japan’s immigration fees in line with standard prices in other developed countries, such as the United States and various European nations.

Massive Hikes for Japan Residence Permits and PR Applications

Wages and paperwork for foreign residents living in Japan are also impacted by the 2026 immigration update. Administrative costs for long-term stay permits will skyrocket:

1. Visa Extensions and Status Changes: Rising from ¥6,000 to a sliding scale of ¥10,000–¥70,000 (around Rp1.1 million to Rp7.7 million).
2. Permanent Residency (PR) Applications: Jumping from a flat ¥10,000 to between ¥200,000 and ¥300,000 (approximately Rp22 million to Rp33 million).

Why is Japan Raising Its Immigration Fees?

With Japan’s foreign resident population now exceeding 4 million people, the government cited a heavy administrative and monitoring burden as the primary reason for the price increase. Additionally, the recent weakness of the Japanese Yen and long-term inflation contributed to the decision.

The extra revenue generated from these higher fees will be used to fund major public and digital upgrades, including:

1. Digitalizing the immigration system for smoother processing.
2. Funding social integration and Japanese language education for foreign expats.
3. Strengthening border security and tracking stay-permit violations.

Introducing JESTA: Japan's New Electronic Travel System

Alongside the fee increases, Japan is preparing to launch the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization (JESTA).

Similar to the United States' ESTA system, JESTA will serve as a digital pre-screening tool for visa-exempt travelers. It is designed to flag potential security risks before tourists board their flights, while speeding up airport immigration lines for approved visitors. The JESTA system is expected to fully roll out by the end of fiscal year 2028.
